Hinton to speak at 2012 HCC Commencement
 
WELDON, N.C. – Superior Court Judge Alma Hinton will be the featured speaker at Halifax Community College’s (HCC) commencement exercises slated for 10 a.m., Saturday, May 12, in The Centre’s auditorium. During the ceremony, 389 degrees, certificates and diplomas will be conferred, including 51 high school equivalency diplomas.

Hinton is the senior resident Superior Court judge for District 6A in Halifax County, N.C. A native of Raleigh, N.C., she attended North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University earning a B.A. in psychology in 1986 and a juris doctor from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 1990.

Hinton came to Halifax County in 1991 as an assistant district attorney (ADA) and practiced as an ADA for approximately 10 years. In November 2000, Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. appointed Hinton to the District Court bench. Then in August 2004, Hinton was appointed by Governor Michael F. Easley to the Superior Court bench and three months later in November 2004, she was elected to that seat for an eight-year term.

Hinton is the first African-American and the first female to serve as a District Court judge and the first African-American and the first female to serve as Superior Court judge for Halifax County. Commencement is open to the public.
