Earn an Elementary Education Teaching Degree Without Leaving
Home!
Halifax and Northampton Counties are in desperate need of qualified
teachers. Unfortunately, many of our most talented young people leave the
area to attend college and they never return. The good news is that there
are hundreds of individuals living right here who would be excellent
teachers. Their problem is that there are no nearby universities where
they can to earn their degrees.
That's why Halifax Community College and Elizabeth City State
University have formed a partnership to enable the Roanoke Valley to grow
its own teachers and make dreams come true for future teachers as well as
students and parents who are counting on the public schools to meet their
educational needs.
Rural areas of North Carolina are feeling the teacher shortage
especially hard. The closest teacher education programs in the UNC System
are about 90 miles from the Roanoke Valley—too far for working folks to
travel after work.
The program was first made available to teacher assistants. In the
first semester, there were over 100 students enrolled in the program. Most of these were teacher assistants, but some were not.
While some of the students in the program will be enrolling right out of
high school, it is anticipated that the majority of the students will be
older, working adults.
