2006-2007 Update

HCC was among 38 colleges that achieved a "superior" rating from the state system and also met 11 of 12 Critical Success Factors measures. HCC scored highest, 100 percent, in the categories of employer satisfaction with graduates, client satisfaction with customized training, goal completion, and employment status of graduates. All of HCC’s 2004-05 graduates were employed within one year of graduating.
Ticket windows opened for the first time at HCC’s The Centre, featuring the most ambitious season since the theater’s opening. Shows included "Young Elvis!," "Man of Constant Sorrow," "Romeo & Juliet," Moscow Ballet’s "The Nutcracker," the Harlem Gospel Choir and "Laughing with the Legends." The North Carolina Symphony and Chuck Davis’ African American Dance Ensemble also performed.
Dr. Ervin V. Griffin, Sr. was selected as the fourth president. Dr. Griffin was previously the president and CEO of West Virginia State Community and Technical College. He made history when he became the first African-American president of HCC.
A partnership to offer a four-year degree completion program in business or social science through Chowan University was formed.
A $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation will enable East Carolina University to help Roanoke Valley public school teachers plan lessons that focus on business-related science, technology, engineering and mathematics problems. HCC will host workshops that will bring together education, business and community partners for the project.
HCC received access to the SAS inSchool® Curriculum Pathways® for Higher education program. The pilot will provide a robust array of digital learning content for e-learners in colleges and universities. It provides Web-based educational content that adult learners can access from any place with an Internet connection.
HCC will celebrate its 40th anniversary Sept. 7, 2007, and is using the theme, "40 Years of Bringing Learning to Life." A variety of campus events are being planned. Each department has been spotlighted since January.
HCC partnered with Cisco Systems, Inc., to get the company on HCC’s campus and into area high schools. A donation of seven 2500 series Cisco routers was made for students to have hands-on lab experience, and a Cisco Academy curriculum was implemented.
HCC formed a new partnership with Eastern Carolina Christian College (ECCC). A formal agreement was approved by the HCC Board of Trustees on June 26. As part of the agreement, HCC will provide general education courses to ECCC students, which are transferable.
Partnerships continued with Elizabeth City State University and East Carolina University in the area of teacher preparation and with North Carolina Central University in the area of nursing.
Continuing Education FTEs increased 67% over previous year ’s FTEs.
Human Resources Development FTEs increased 450% (greatest increase in the community college system).
The Small Business Center in 2006-07 had more than 1,200 participants; offered 69 classes; counseled 64 people one-on-one; wrote "Biz Connections" articles for the Daily Herald; and prepared 50 tax returns free with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.
Continuing Education received two Homeland Security grants for delivery of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training and related services. This training initiative is a joint effort between the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety – Division of Emergency Management and the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS).
Continuing Education was awarded a Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) Grant. The Career Readiness Certificate is an assessment-based credential that gives employers and career seekers a uniform measure of key workplace skills. The CRC is a portable skills credential, assuring employers that a job applicant actually has the basic skills they seek.
Our Fire Safety and Rescue Programs offer a wide range of specialty course including underwater rescue, and was one of the first in the system to offer online paramedic and weapons of mass destruction courses.
