Alpha Eta Phi Chapter History
We are in the Carolinas Region and
our coordinator is John Sharpe (Papa John). Currently, there are
over 50 chapters in North Carolina alone. Our chapter was chartered
in April 1982. Ms. Sandra Ward, an alumni member of Phi Theta Kappa,
was teaching at HCC and felt the need to have a chapter here. She
talked to the President, Dr. Philip Taylor, and then made all the
applications, etc., necessary to charter a chapter at our
institution. She served as advisor until she resumed her studies
toward her doctorate. Mr. Raybon Bone served as advisor for a time
and Dr. P.S. Jones began serving as advisor in 1994 and Katherine
Sandlin began serving as advisor in 1997. Ms. Sandlin was a member
of Alpha Eta Phi from 1987-1989, served as Vice President and acting
President in 1989. In the next three years, Alpha Eta Phi made great
progress in growth. In 1998, at the Regional Convention, Alpha Eta
Phi made the 1st Star Level, for the first time ever. At the1999
Convention, we made 2 Star Level and won 8 different awards for
everything from improvement to participation to service. Two of our
student members were added to the Hall of Honors and Dr. Jones
received two awards of her own. In 1999, we again reached 2 Star
Level. In 2000, we worked very hard and finally reached 5 Star
Level. We are now trying to maintain that level in 2001. We take
pride in our membership and work hard to help the chapter reach the
top.
Alpha Eta Phi occasionally inducts
honorary members. At the Fall Induction-2001 we added Mr. Terry
Wheeler to our impressive list of honorary members.
We also give awards to our members.
The Spring Induction (1999) was the first time we gave Chapter
Awards, but the advisors feel it is important to recognize the
students who work so hard to keep the Chapter active.
Alpha Eta Phi currently has 38 members. In May
2006, 35 members graduated from two-year degree programs. Members
participate in the Better World Books program, Relay for Life, and
other community service projects in partial fulfillment of the
Hallmarks. |
