The Pulp and Paper Technology curriculum at Halifax Community College is designed to prepare individuals with a Certificate, Diploma or Associate degree in science for careers in pulp and paper manufacturing and related industries. Instruction includes pulp and paper process, maintenance, and business fundamentals needed to operate, maintain and troubleshoot pulp and paper equipment and processes.

Students will gain technical knowledge in wood science, pulping, bleaching, stock preparation, paper machines, economics and regulatory issues with understanding of control and measuring devices. Practical application will be emphasized.

Upon completion of any of the levels of this curriculum, graduates should gain the necessary skills and technical knowledge to qualify for employment or advancement in the pulp and paper industry.

To Prospective Paper Science/Technology Students

Welcome to the Pulp and Paper Technology web page at Halifax Community College.  We believe that this program offers excellent opportunities to any student who wants to draw a good salary or wants to be an engineer.

It gives the students a basic science foundation with courses in pulp and paper technology. Opportunities after graduation are excellent.  In good economic times, many of our seniors have accepted positions before graduation, typically with an average starting salary ranging from $38,000-$55,000 per year in recent times.  Others are placed soon after graduation.  Our overall placement percentage has been essentially 99.9%

Advancement after graduation is a function of many personal factors but HCC Alumni are doing very well.  We also have students continue their education in four year colleges/universities. We have a full-fledged industry co-op program available to our students.  This is a program in which the student alternates paid work and study semesters. Co-op work experience is very valuable in identifying the career area of most interest to the student.  It also is viewed as the kind of experience essential in obtaining permanent placement for the future.

When you are a senior in high school and planning to enter HCC in the coming year you can take one PPT course with free tuition and free books.

There are two admission deadlines of which you should be aware.  First, those students who wish to be eligible for early decision admission must submit a completed application by early registration date.  Second, students who desire to be considered for regular admission must apply by regular admission time. Dates/time and further information for admission can be obtained from the HCC main web page.

However, I will be happy to provide any additional information that you may need.   I invite you to visit our department and laboratory when you have a time.

With Best Wishes
