Placement Tests

New Placement Testing Procedures!

Welcome! You have made an important decision that will change the course of your life. You have decided to pursue your education after high school.

Students entering curriculum degree programs at Halifax Community College are administered the ASSET Placement Assessment to determine the appropriate enrollment in writing, reading, and math courses. The ASSET is not a pass/fail test. It is one part of a course placement program. The ASSET is free of charge to prospective students. ASSET placement test results are valid for one year.

BEFORE the Day of the Test...

  1. Have an application on file prior to taking the ASSET test.
  2. Notify the testing coordinator at 252-536-7254 or admissions office personnel at the time of application if:
    • you have previously taken the ASSET test and/or
    • you have a disability that requires special testing accommodations accommodations.
  3. The Asset English placement test will be given in Room 336 in the 300 building.

ACCUPLACER Math Testing: BEFORE the Day of the Test... 
  1. Have an application on file prior to taking the ACCUPLACER math placement test.
  2. Notify the testing coordinator at 252-536-7254 or admissions office at 252-536-7225 at the time of application if:
    • you have a disability that requires special testing accommodations accommodations.
    • You have previously taken a placement test.
  3. Called the testing coordinator at 252-536-7254, or the admission’s office at 252-536-7225 to schedule an appointment to take the ACCUPLACER math test.
  4. Have a legal issued picture identification card.
  5. Know your Halifax Community College issued student identification number.
  6. Students should go to the website www.accuplacer.org and review the sample tests to prepare for the test.
  7. The ACCUPLACER math test will be taken on computer in room 338.

  1. Call Julia Horsley in the Enrollment Office (room 335) 536-7254 for more information on the ASSET, if you wish.
  2. Review the ASSET Student Guide before you come. It contains tips for taking the test and a sample test with answers.

ON the Day of the Test...

  1. Please be on time for your appointment; no one will be permitted to enter the testing room after the first five minutes of the scheduled time.
  2. Plan to be on campus for three hours for placement testing.
  3. Bring your picture ID and Social Security number with you.
  4. Go to the Front Desk in the 100 Building to register as a Visitor.
  5. Request a parking permit and place it on your vehicle prior to your appointment.
  6. Do not bring children with you.
  7. Make sure you are well rested and not hungry before you come for the test.
  8. Bring glasses with you if you will need them to read.
  9. Meet with the Testing Coordinator, after your test has been completed and scored, to review your test scores and discuss your next steps

FOLLOWING the Day of the Test...

  1. Meet with your assigned academic advisor during Early Registration or regular registration to complete a class schedule
  2. If your placement test scores indicate that additional skill building work is needed, your advisor will place you in the correct developmental courses required before you can proceed to the degree courses. These courses will prepare you for college success.
