Who takes the ASSET Placement
Assessment?
All students entering Halifax Community College are required to take
the ASSET Placement Assessment. This assessment tool is used to determine
a student’s academic skills and the results are used to place the student
in the most appropriate level in English, reading, and math. Admission to
HCC is not based upon the assessment results, e.g., there is no pass/fail.
There is no fee for taking the assessment; scores are valid for one year.
Student’s Responsibilities
Students should call 536-7254 to schedule an assessment time. If the
testing coordinator is out of the office administering a test, and/or if
the voice mail is full, the receptionist may transfer calls to student
services, 536-7232. Students should also plan to arrive at the testing
room see schedule at least fifteen minutes prior to the scheduled
assessment time for testing instructions. If a student scores within two
points of the cut-off score, the student may ask for a re-assessment.
Retesting is done by appointment only and can be arranged by calling
536-7254 or 536-7207.
Who may be exempt from taking the Placement Assessment?
Transfer Student Exemption: A transfer student must have an official
college transcript which shows completion of a college level English or
mathematics course with a “C” grade or better to be exempt from the math
or English placement assessment. Transfer students should check on the
results of their transcript evaluation prior to taking the placement
assessment.
General Information
Students are advised to go first to Room 312 and complete an
HCC application prior to taking the assessment. Assessment scores cannot
be entered into the computer until an application has been completed and
is on file. Students are also encouraged to pick up a study sheet in Room
312 before testing. It is not mandatory, but
students do much better if they review and study before taking the
assessment.
Students should notify the testing coordinator, counselor, or admissions
personnel at the time of application if they have previously taken ASSET
or if they have a disability that requires special testing accommodations.
No one will be permitted to enter testing after five minutes of the
scheduled time. If students cannot keep their scheduled time, they should
notify the assessment coordinator to change the assessment time.
They should plan to be on campus three 3 hours for placement testing and
should have or know their social security number. All materials for
testing will be provided. Calculators are allowed only for the algebra
portion of the assessment. Snacks, drinks, and children are not allowed in
the testing room.
For further information, contact the testing coordinator, Julia Horsley in
Room 307, or call 536-7254.
