HCC Plans Allied Health Equipment and Facility Upgrades

Halifax Community College plans to spend $148,762 to upgrade equipment and facilities related to its allied health programs.  The project will be completed in four segments.

Segment I

Upgrade the Centre auditorium to make it useable as a large classroom.  This will involve installing two 106” x 188” High Definition flat screen TVs on either side of the stage.  The screens will allow a close-up of the instructor and any accompanying instructional aids.  A High Definition camcorder and two 6000 lumen wide format projectors will provide visual and video capabilities.  Audio upgrades will involve the installation of four monitor speakers on the stage area.  Projected cost for this segment is $43,347.82.

Segment II

Purchase and install a digital radiography machine in the dental hygiene lab of the Allied Health Building.  Total cost of the unit with server and installation is $51,874.17.

Segment III

Install a wireless hotspot system to provide wireless capability to the entire campus.  One 5Ghz base radio and four 5Ghz CPE radios along with 37 outdoor AP radios will convert HCC to a WiFi zone.  Total cost for the unit is $22,512.63.

Segment IV

Update the nursing/dental hygiene computer lab.  Replacing obsolete equipment will be 27 Dell OptiPlex 380 minitower computers for use in computer aided instruction and test taking.  Segment cost: $31,100.31.

The project is being financed through a congressional appropriation arranged by Rep. G.K. Butterfield of North Carolina’s First Congressional District.  Work is projected to start Sept.15 and be completed by December 15, 2010.
