Breakout Session 2: You Are Who They See: College and Hip-Hop Culture…

Schools prepare you academically but what about education outside of the classroom? What is your street I.Q.? Currently hundreds of thousands of people are living at a disadvantage because of a run-in with the law. Correcting past charges (sometimes accusations), even if only once, can limit your eligibility for jobs, college financial aid, military service, voters registration rights, drivers license, out of state travel, and even the major you chose in college. This interactive discussion will help you understand how to excel in high school and college as well as how to survive in the streets.

Middle School Men How The Images You See In The Media Impact You
and Your Sense of Self Worth

Don't cave in to peer pressure just to be accepted by other middle schoolers. Don't compromise your own morals because of what you heard in a Rap song or saw on TV. Don't gang up on another classmate or engage in other behaviors that make you uncomfortable which you know are wrong. Why do we mimic the negative behavior and make fun of positive ones?

College Men (Report to room 401) Breakout Session 3: The Focus Is On You: Positive Branding for the Minority Male Image

Projecting a positive image-one that commands respect will keep you advancing personally, academically, and professionally. Everything you do or don’t do, say or don’t say, is evaluated and judged by others. Potential employers are everywhere you are and often listen to your talk, watch your dress, and how you carry yourself. Your image and personal branding is always unfolding and offers others a reflection of who you are and what you have to offer. Learn how to develop a reputation as a confident, intelligent male or employee

Faculty & Staff Session: Developing Successful Students: Building and Sustaining Quality Relationships…

A key impact on student success can often be realized via enhanced faculty-student relationships and interpersonal skills. Ernest Pascarella, in How College Affects Students, 1991, and others, found that student participation in peer culture and the frequency and quality of interactions with faculty and staff contributed to achievement beyond academic characteristics.

This session is facilitated by senior faculty at St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, NC. This interactive discussion brings together faculty and staff from 4 year and 2-year colleges, teachers, principals, and curriculum coordinators to share proven strategies, best practices, and lessons learned in increasing student performance, success, and retention.
