HCC holds GEAR UP for College Success - Summer Bridge Program
 
WELDON, N.C. – Gear Up is an acronym for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. It is an early intervention program to help students realize their potential. GEAR UP NC partnered with Halifax Community College to offer the GEAR UP for College Success- Summer Bridge Program for graduating seniors at Southeast Halifax High School (SHHS). This partnership will continue to 2019.

Participation in this program allowed students the opportunity to enroll in the important foundational college courses which include college level English III – Writing and Inquiry, Math 143 – Quantitative Literacy, and ACA 122 – College Transfer Success. A luncheon was held on July 30, 2015, to present certificates to the participants. During the luncheon Dr. Griffin, President of HCC, gave opening remarks and encouraged students to take charge of their life and not to allow friends to stop them from getting were they need to go. He told them to understand that sometimes you must let certain friends and individuals go and continue what is important to you. He ended with “Do not miss your date with destiny; you have an important role to play, you can always count on us for support”.

Griffin, Sr., HCC President, Dr. Deryl Davis Fulmer, HCC Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Stevie Lawrence, Director of College Success Services, University of NC General Administration, Ms. Martha Davis, Principal of Southeast Halifax High School, Ms. Millicent Winstead, Southeast High School – GEAR UP, Ms. Sandra Weden, HCC English Instructor, Mr. Derrick Hale, HCC Math Instructor, Ms. Terry Jones, HCC ACA Instructor, Ms. Sherida Gholston, Director of Student Services and student participants, Jakarya Council and RaJanique Silver.
