“A Red Carpet Affair” held at HCC
WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) was the site of “A Red Carpet Affair: Student Awards Ceremony and Gala” hosted by Student Support Services, Student Government Association, Phi Theta Kappa and the National Technical Honor Society on April 23 at The Centre.

Student Dennis Broady made remarks about the Student Support Services (SSS) program. He shared a success story that is in progress—his story. Broady expressed his thankfulness to the SSS program and staff for much-needed assistance. He talked about the positive impact that Student Development Advisor Terry Jones has had on him. “She genuinely cares and wants all students to accomplish their goals,” said Broady of Jones.

“Everyone needs help at some point and time in their lives…As I continue to embark on my educational path, I pray that I can pay it forward in a form that reflects what I have received from Halifax Community College and Student Support Services. I am eternally grateful for all of your help,” Broady said.

SSS graduates, Dean’s List and President’s List recipients were recognized. For 2013-14, the SSS Program at HCC served 250 students. It provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements and serves to motivate students toward the successful completion of their post-secondary education. These students received more than 1,000 hours of academic support through tutoring, advising and counseling. Eighty-two percent of SSS students were in good academic standing.

The Alph Eta Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa inducted 13 new members during the spring ceremony. Inductees included Rhonda Brown, Cynthia Bryant, Ryann Collins, Patricia Currin, Matthew Ellison, Latesha Fields, Sydnee Gibson, Chelcie Kurzontkowski, Rodney Lashley, Sherwainke Mitchell, Jennifer Newsome, Kierra Pittman and Shawanda Ruffin-Witherspoon.

National Technical Honor Society advisor Christopher Young talked about the organization and recognized members.

Awards and recognitions were also presented by the Student Government Association.
