HCC Child Care Center to celebrate National Week of the Young Child

WELDON, N.C. – The Halifax Community College (HCC) Child Care Center is asking the community to come together for children during the Week of the Young Child, April 13-17. As part of the national week-long event celebrated across the country, the College’s child care center is honoring young children and all those who make a difference in children’s lives.

“All young children need and deserve high-quality early learning experiences that will prepare them for life and we have a great opportunity to do our part to help young children,” said Arlene Moore, HCC center director. “Week of the Young Child is a time for the community to recognize that early years are learning years for all young children.”

A variety of activities are slated for the week:
  • Monday, April 13 @ 9 a.m.: Parade of Children on the Roanoke Valley Fitness Interactive Trail and Crazy Hat/Story Book Character Day (open to the public). Contact Moore if you would like to participate by coming in to read a story to the children or just to hang out with them.
  • Tuesday, April 14 @ 10 a.m.: Picasso Day with family members. Each parent and his/her child will draw pictures and the pictures will be displayed down the hall of the child care center with assistance from the HCC Early Childhood Department (open to the public).
  • Wednesday, April 15 from 10 a.m. – Noon: Weird Science Day. This event will feature science activities that will be made by parents, the HCC Early Childhood Department and others who would like to participate. Put on your thinking caps and let’s be creative!
  • Thursday, April 16: Community Helpers/Career Day. Children will wear an outfit that will represent who or what they would like to be when they grow up. Also, “An Evening Under the Stars” will be held from 5-7 p.m. Children and parents will dress in their finest clothes and enjoy an evening out.
  • Friday, April 17 from 9 a.m. – Noon: Fun Day Close Out. This event will consist of games, games and more games sponsored by the HCC Early Childhood Department on the playground and bag lunches.
Week of the Young Child is sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and is an opportunity for early childhood programs across the country, including child care and Head Start programs, preschools, and elementary schools, to hold activities to bring awareness to the needs of young children.

Young children and their families depend on high-quality education and care, which help children get a great start and bring lasting benefits to the community. Week of the Young Child is a time to recognize the importance of early learning and early literacy, and to celebrate the teachers and policies that bring early childhood education to young children.
