HCC Internet class is big hit with students

WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) Workforce & Economic Development student Rozelia Pittman got a virus. Not the kind that makes you physically ill, but one on her computer. When she saw that HCC offered "Email, Searching & Internet Basics" class, she had to enroll.

"The virus crashed my computer. So, I got a new computer and thought it would be good to take the class," explained Pittman. "I've learned so much."

Fellow student Larry Plum already had some knowledge of computers. Yet, there were still some key things that he needed to know. "And, Mrs. [Ellen] Grant is a great teacher," Plum added, and all of the other students agreed.

The course provides introductory-level study of how to efficiently use the Internet. It provides students with basic knowledge and understanding of Internet basics, search engines, electronic mail, downloading files and safe browsing. Students are encouraged to bring their own laptops and computers.

James and Malinda Coleman are also enjoying the class. "I told my husband that since we had a computer, we needed to take this class. It has been a fun learning experience," said Malinda.

"I didn't know anything about email. When people call, they want you to email something to them, so this class has really helped," added James. "Just remember, you're never too old to learn."

The next Internet class will be announced later this year. The cost to register is $70 plus a $5 technology fee. Call Workforce & Economic Development at 536-7212, 536-7216 or 536-7261to register or for more details.
