HCC's Couden honored with NCCCS Academic Excellence Award

WELDON, N.C. Halifax Community College's (HCC) Georgiana Couden has been honored by the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) as an outstanding student, earning the system's Academic Excellence Award, "The Great Within the 58." The recognition was made during the HCC 2014 commencement ceremony. Each year, one student from every community college in the state receives the Academic Excellence medal and a certificate from NCCCS.

Couden marched in commencement exercises on May10. She graduated with an associate degree in human services technology from HCC in December with a 4.0 grade point average. She has been a leader in the HCC Human Services Technology Club and assisted with the first-ever Charity Ball this year. Proceeds from the ball went to Angel's Closet and the HCC Scholarship Fund. Prior to the ball, she helped organize a fashion show. Couden is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

"Halifax Community College offered challenges and solutions, creativity and support, and enrichment through empowerment. I not only learned what was in the syllabus, but I learned about myself along the way, emerging a better person than when I had started," stated Couden during the selection process. "I firmly believe education happens every day through life experience but some experiences have more value than others. My experience at Halifax Community College is definitely valuable to me. In fact, it's priceless," she added.

Couden is currently enrolled at Brescia University where she is working on a Bachelor of Social Work. She also tutors in the HCC Student Success Center, and is a wife and mother.

The recommended criteria for award selections include:
  • Must be currently enrolled
  • Must have completed at least 12 semester hours in an associate degree program
  • Must have a cumulative grade point average of not less than 3.25
