HCC hosts Health Science Boot Camp

WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) hosted a Health Science Boot Camp this summer. The camp was provided for rising 8th and 9th graders in the area and was funded by the North Carolina Community College System. At the beginning of the camp, students reviewed the Futures for Kids website at www.f4k.org, which is an online career exploration program. In addition, students took pre- and post-boot camp assessments, which were developed and used during the camp.

Camp faculty brought in various health science professionals from the surrounding area to talk with students during Mapping Every Direction (MED) Talks. During Day 1, campers took a pretest and explored careers with a phlebotomist/medical lab technician, respiratory therapist and a physical therapist assistant during MED Talk sessions.

During Day 2, campers heard from instructors in the nursing and dental hygiene departments during MED Talks.

A Wings & Wheels Emergency and Critical Care Transport Symposium was held on Day 3, giving students a chance to hear from Vidant Medical Transport representatives. As part of class time, students also had the opportunity to become certified in CPR.

On Day 4, campers were given a post-test to evaluate their progress through the program and the Career Readiness Certificate assessment.

Students took part in mini simulations in the nursing simulation lab, taking advantage of the technologically-advanced Sim mannequins in the lab. They also participated in various hands-on activities in HCC’s nursing, dental hygiene, medical laboratory, phlebotomy and science departments such as simulated blood typing, blood glucose monitoring, urinalysis, simulated veni-puncture, microbial quality control and analyses, simulated dental x-rays, dental plaque gram staining and microscopy.

A nursing student orientation was held to give instruction on the courses that students need to take in order to complete the nursing curriculum.

In addition to hearing from professionals in the field, students used the Health Careers Today (5th edition) textbook. Each student was provided with the textbook, a backpack, uniform, breakfast, lunch, snacks and camp supplies.
