Halifax Community College awards degrees, certificates and diplomas to the Class of 2013

WELDON, N.C. – Halifax Community College (HCC) graduated the class of 2013 on Saturday, May 11, in The Centre. This year marked the 46th annual commencement. During the ceremony, 353 degrees, certificates and diplomas were conferred on 320 graduates. Representative Michael H. Wray was the featured speaker.

Wray highlighted events of 1967 when HCC was founded. He encouraged graduates to inspire the next generation of future leaders to get involved and give back to the state and community. He shared some leadership tips, which included:
  • Learn decision making skills
  • Become a motivator
  • Learn to listen
  • Recognize your personal shortcomings
  • Improve your oral communication skills
  • Never be afraid to take risks
  • Be trustworthy

"Always strive to do what you love and make a difference," said Wray. "I challenge you to grab hold of every opportunity that is placed before you."

HCC President Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr. gave the charge to the graduates. He encouraged graduates on the following points:
  • Have personal integrity
  • Don't be a selfish person
  • Remember how much you had to give to get where you are today; have a giving attitude
  • Have an unwavering commitment to truth
  • Have a long-term perspective on life
  • Have a passionate pursuit of excellence in all you do

"I charge you to be a leader in the 21st century who practices personal integrity, a selfless attitude, a giving attitude, an unwavering commitment to truth, a long-term perspective toward life and living, and always have a passionate pursuit of excellence in all of the things you do… Life is very, very short, and you don't want to wake up with regrets," said Griffin.

Graduate Tonya Mason gave the student response. She thanked all for making the graduation a success. Mason then described her journey to and through HCC, acknowledging friends and mentors. "For those of us who are graduating today, it was all worth it," she said. "Classmates, now that we are here, May 2013, and all of our efforts have come to fruition, we are overcomers. Class of 2013, congratulations on your accomplishments and keep looking forward to your next goals."

Recipients of the seventh annual Presidential Partnership Award were honored. The award recognizes organizations and individuals who assist HCC in fulfilling its mission. Angel's Closet, Congressman G.K. Butterfield, Halifax County Economic Development Commission and Regeneration Development Group Inc. were presented the award for their commitment and partnership in developing education, workforce and economic development programs in the Roanoke Valley.

The ceremony highlighted student academic success. Kyrian Scott was honored by the North Carolina Community College System as an outstanding student, earning the system's Academic Excellence Award and representing HCC.
