Cheryl H. McElheney of
Roanoke Rapids has established the Bernice Hatchell Hobday
Nursing Scholarship 2008 at Halifax Community College in
loving memory of her late mother, Bernice Adell Hatchell
Hobday. The scholarship is also established to the glory of
God and in honor of Margaret Nixon and Ruth Elliott Oakes.
The award will recognize and promote academic achievement
for a student enrolled at HCC who is in need of financial
assistance. The annual scholarship recipient will be
selected based on grade point average, full-time enrollment,
two letters of recommendation recognizing citizenship
qualities and community involvement, demonstration of
financial need, and program of study.
“HCC is second to none one of the best schools that we are
affiliated with and it is an honor to be establishing this
scholarship during the presidency of Dr. Griffin,” said
McElheney. She and husband, Charles, who is HCC's Foundation
Board Chair, seek to perpetuate the memory of their parents
through the establishment of scholarships, first, because of
their parents' love of education and second, because
children need every opportunity to gain an education. The
McElheney's support Chowan University, HCC, Mercer
University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State
University.
“I want to thank the McElheney family for this wonderful
opportunity,” said Dr. Ervin V. Griffin, Sr., HCC president.
“If others in the community would like to honor their
parents in like manner, I would encourage them to contact
our Foundation Office to establish scholarships that will
benefit our students for years to come.”
