Halifax Community College held an Associate Degree Dental Hygiene and Associate Degree Nursing Graduates Pinning Ceremony for the class of 2008, May 10. The ceremony was held after commencement exercises in The Centre.

Dental Hygiene Instructor Ruth Glisson was a keynote speaker. “Dare to always be the best you can be,” she said. “People who burn out are those who've become complacent and have lost the energizing thrill that comes from a personal quest to discover the question to their own life questions.” She stressed living life to the fullest, daring to truly live life, being proud of oneself, being passionate about the profession, being proactive and believing in oneself.

HCC alumna and Halifax Regional Medical Center Emergency Care Center staff nurse Sheree Jenkins was the second keynote speaker. She emphasized the great need for more nurses, more nursing faculty and training facilities. She also discussed the roles of nursing including that of patient advocate and protector. “As a nurse, you must be able to bring a special understanding to all those entrusted to your care,” she said. A graduate of the program 25 years ago, Jenkins had another reason to celebrate the day. Her daughter, Kristie Wommack, graduated from the program this year.

Dental Hygiene graduates were Katherine Anderson, Christina Aycock, April Barrier, Jennifer Brown, Michelle Butler, Stephen Daniels, Stephanie Duke, Dawn Godfrey, Erica Gregory, Rosalyn Johnson, Stacey Kenyon, Michelle Kemp, Carrier Spencer, Adrienne Batten Vester, and Victoria Wester.
