ARMSTRONG GETS VP PROMOTION AT HCC

HCC's Deborah Armstrong was recently promoted to Vice President of Administrative Services. College President, Dr. Ervin V. Griffin, Sr. was on hand to congratulate her.

After serving as the interim vice president for almost one year, Deborah Armstrong was recently promoted to Vice President of Administrative Services at Halifax Community College (HCC). Armstrong has worked for seven years at the college, previously serving as Accounting Services Coordinator and Business Manager.

As vice president, she oversees a staff of 41 in the Business Office, Cash Office, Payroll/Personnel, Bookstore, Information Services, Maintenance, Housekeeping, Security, Reception Desk, and Mail Room. She develops and assures the efficient operation of the financial record-keeping system and works with the president to develop revenue forecasts. She also coordinates the development of institutional budgets including a system of budget reporting and control.

Armstrong has been interested in business and finance since high school. After graduation, she enrolled in Hardbarger Business College. At the time, only men enrolled in the accounting program. Armstrong decided to enroll in merchandising classes with the hope of becoming a women's ready-to-wear buyer. She landed a job in the sales department of a North Carolina manufacturer of infant sleepwear.

Later, doors started to open for women in the accounting field, and Armstrong was eager to move beyond basic bookkeeping to areas of budget forecasting, account analysis and financial reporting. In 1983, she was ready to return to college for an accounting degree. She quit a full-time job to enter Nash Community College as a full-time student. By the end of the first semester, she was offered a part-time job keeping the books for a program at the college, and by the end of the first year, she was offered a full-time position.

For the next 15 years, Armstrong worked at Nash and continued her studies at night. She earned the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Accounting with honors, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting, cum laude, from North Carolina Wesleyan College, and a Master of Business Administration Degree from Campbell University. She has also completed the North Carolina Community College Leadership Program and the Senior Administrators Leadership Institute at the UNC School for Leadership Development at Chapel Hill.

Armstrong served on the Strategic Planning Committee while at Nash and served on the Leadership Development Team and the President's Leadership Team at HCC. She has also served on the SACS Review Committee at Nash and on both the Professional Advisory Committee and the Diversity Committee at HCC. In 1995, she served on the Association of Community College Business Officials Executive Committee. She currently serves on the Budget Committee and the Financial Audit Committee.

"The community college at both the state level and the local level encouraged and supported me all through the growth of my career in accounting," said Armstrong. "In Spring 1999, I came full circle when, as an adjunct instructor at NCC, I taught the same ‘Accounting for Governmental and Nonprofit Entities' class that I had taken as a student."

"I am a product of the North Carolina Community College System. My recent appointment as Vice President of Administrative Services comes as a result of the solid educational foundation I received at Nash Community College and the encouragement of faculty and staff to continue my education," said Armstrong. A member of Phi Beta Lambda, a student business organization, and Gamma Beta Phi, an honor society, Armstrong was also named to Who's Who Among American College Students while at Nash.

She continued, "Today, I am dedicated to seeing that Halifax Community College is here for anyone who seeks a college degree and the doors it can open. A community college made possible my career. I now want to give something back by making certain others have the same opportunity for success."

Armstrong, a native of Enfield, is the daughter of Nellie H. Armstrong and the late W. Frank Armstrong. Her brother Steve and his wife, Sue, reside in North Carolina; brother, Tim resides in Florida. She is a member of Enfield Baptist Church and the North Carolina Wesleyan College Alumni Association.
