Learning Coaches:

  • develop individualized college success plans and monitor performance/progress from initial enrollment through graduation and/or transfer

  • are cross-trained in policies, procedures, and resources and act as primary contacts for solving problems throughout the enrollment period

  • provide critical one-on-one assistance with major selection, registration, academic monitoring, financial aid, tutoring, class withdrawal processes and linkages to campus mentoring, workship/internship, student activities, and counseling opportunities

  • increase graduations and transfer success by ensuring participants complete all requirements for graduation and transfer to an appropriate four-year university

  • assists students with identifying financial aid and scholarship resources

P.R.I.D.E. of Halifax Men and Male Mentors

Professional Mentors

Mentors focus on building essential skills needed to become responsible and productive citizens and address the social, emotional and cultural needs of the mentee. Mentors are trained to act as confidants, ombudsman, advocates, and role models.

Mentors are selected from various professions including government, business, education, law enforcement, community agencies, and the faith communities.  Both mentors and LCs act intrusively by contacting students on a regular basis.

Workships and Internships

LCs, in partnership with the College’s JobLink office, assist students with becoming involved in workship and/or internship experiences.

Students participate in an on-campus job fair to identify work opportunities.   During the first year, students work 10 hours per week and receive training in both hard and soft skills in the workplace.  During the second year, placement will be at a business location external to the college.  Efforts will be made to place students in his/her area of academic study.
