We are committed to improving the lives of all
children in the Roanoke Valley one teacher at a time. We offer students
three different options for entering the field of education- one associate
degree and two certificates.
Early Childhood Associate (Tracking
Sheet)
This is a two year associate degree program that
prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through early
childhood in diverse learning environments.
Students will have the opportunity to apply learned educational
theory with practice in approved high quality early education settings
under the supervision of qualified teachers. Employment opportunities
include child development and child care programs, preschools, public and
private schools, recreational centers, Head Start Programs, and school age
programs. Additionally
depending on electives chosen the student also has the option to transfer
to certain four year institutions.
Lateral Entry Certificate (Tracking
Sheet)
The Lateral Entry certificate program provides an
affordable and accessible option for students who have previously earned a
bachelor’s degree in a field other than education to pursue permanent
teacher licensure in the state of North Carolina. It was initiated in 2006
through the joint efforts of the governor’s office, the legislature,
community colleges and institutions of higher education, to increase the
number of certified teachers in North Carolina’s public schools. In order
to complete the requirements to apply for licensure the student must first
complete 18 hours of coursework at Halifax Community College. Additional
competencies must be completed through coursework at a senior institution.
(We have partnered with Elizabeth City State University) When all
coursework is completed, the teacher must pass the Praxis III, before
permanent licensure may be considered. The licensure process is completed
by the Regional Alternative Licensure Center upon verification of
completion of requirements.
