What We Offer
At Halifax Community College we recognize that
counseling functions as an integral part of the educational process.
Counseling enhances the students’ ability to cope more effectively with
their everyday personal development as well as with crisis situations.
Counselors provide support and assistance with personal and social
issues that directly affects the students’ academic growth while
completing their program of study. Through the use of basic counseling
skills and techniques, the Counselors explore the presenting issue(s),
offer feedback, and develop coping strategies that allow the student to
decide on the best course of action.
HCC Counselors offer both face-to-face and distance
counseling via the internet for academic, career, college transfer,
disability, and personal counseling to HCC students. Students are
encouraged to visit a counselor’s office at any time with issues that
may impact their success in their program of study. Students may
visit a counselor to obtain information about practitioners in the local
area who provide specific services to meet their needs.
Counseling is available for those concerned with drug and alcohol abuse issues. Upon request, an individual may be referred for professional mental health intervention, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, A.A. and/or other community resources as available.
The Counseling Center serves as the liaison and single point of contact for homeless students attending or hoping to attend HCC. Please contact the
Counseling Center for more information.
Counselors assist with recruitment and retention efforts, student enrollment, and developing Success Plans with students on Persistence Alert.
Confidentiality
The HCC counseling staff adheres to the Ethical
Standards of the American Counseling Association (ACA). Included in
those standards is a strict adherence to the policy of confidentiality
regarding counseling services information that is disclosed. Exceptions
for disclosing counseling session information is to be made
only in accordance with
The
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), when a student
presents a danger to themselves and/or others, or if a student discloses
involvement in an illegal activity. Disclosure protection is typically
not awarded to counselors involved in court proceedings.
Students are encouraged to share information with faculty/staff and
administration as deemed appropriate.
Office Hours
The Counseling Center is open Monday through Thursday
from 7:30 am until 6:30 pm and Friday 8:00am until 5:00pm. Appointments
can be made for any counseling services to ensure that students have
ample, uninterrupted time to gather information to make an informed
decision about their major and/or career. Please allow a minimum of one
hour for the session.
Walk-in services are
available and encouraged for the student’s convenience. Counselors will
see students without an appointment on a first come-first served basis.
