HCC: Satellite Sites Reach Out
to the Roanoke Valley
Dr. Ervin V. Griffin, Sr.
President, Halifax Community College
In my last column, I talked about a
new Student Success Activity Grant from the North Carolina Community
College System. The grant will reach out to those in our area's
population who have multiple barriers to education, including our
citizens with limited English proficiency. This plan will offer an
innovative recruitment and retention initiative and will target the
importance of motivation in achieving student success. The
college-wide project will involve students, faculty, staff and
community partners.
The Student Success Activity Grant will start in January 2008. For
the first time, we will be able to hire a part-time
Assessment-Retention Counselor for the spring months. Our project
will work on recruiting hard-to-reach students and also focus on
retaining those students until they complete the requirements for
their GED.
To aid in this endeavor, HCC has several satellite sites throughout
our service area. These include:

From the President's Perspective, we view our Literacy Education
Program as an outreach program to aid people in our community to
attain their educational goals. Our Adult Basic Education and
English as a Second Language components offer small group and
individual attention to students who need to learn to read, improve
basic skills and obtain a high school equivalency diploma. Our hope
is that additional activities can only strengthen our existing
opportunities and reach prospective students who most need these
services.
