Halifax Community College is definitely changing lives one at a
time. I recently learned about HCC student Rodrigo Martinez and how he
decided to attend the college. Let me take this opportunity to tell
you about him.
In January 2003, Rodrigo decided to enroll in the English as a
Second Language Program at the college. Since the program was not
being offered that semester, he was directed into the GED Program.
"Honestly, all I wanted at that time was to continue improving my
English," says Rodrigo.
At the same time, he was dealing with a 26-year drug and alcohol
addition. AA was not working for him, so he used the HCC classes as a
way to distract himself from the urge to use drugs.
In 2004, Rodrigo started taking the classes seriously. His
instructor continued to mention that he had a plan f or Rodrigo. The
plan included attaining a GED and enrolling in college. Each time
Rodrigo heard the plan he thought, "Going to college—this man must be
crazy. I am not ready. He does not know what he's talking about."
By the end of July that year, though, Rodrigo received his GED and
by August, he was enrolled in college. He has a 3.777 average in all
coursework that he has taken at HCC thus far. Quite an accomplishment!
Now, Rodrigo is about to graduate from HCC with an Associate in
Arts degree and he plans to enroll in ECU's Teacher Prep Program.
Thankful for all of the help he has received at HCC, Rodrigo says, "I
know now that I have a great future ahead of me."
July of this year also marked an important milestone for Rodrigo.
As of last month, he has been sober and free of drugs for three years.
Just as in Rodrigo's case, HCC is here to help all citizens of the
Roanoke Valley. Whether you need to improve your English and math
skills, earn your GED, or enroll in one of our curriculum programs, we
are here to assist you in your educational and career goals.
In September, we will celebrate Literacy Month. The HCC Literacy
Education Program serves GED students and those interested in Adult
Basic Education. I encourage you to find out more about our services
by calling (252) 536-7235 or stop by the Learning Lab in Building 500
on our main campus.
From the President's Perspective, the HCC Literacy Education
Program is vital to area citizens. It opens doors that people never
thought possible. We have witnessed first hand the change made in our
students' lives. There may be others in our community who need these
services. Please refer them to us so that they, too, can embark on a
brighter future.
