General Information

Purpose

Halifax Community College Library is an academic library. Its primary purpose is to support our curriculum by providing print and non-print materials for faculty, staff, and students. We are also a public library providing materials and Internet access for the community. It is our mission to support both our campus and community by encouraging life-long learning. These skills include the abilities to locate, evaluate, and apply information to daily living.

How to Obtain a Library Card

Faculty, staff, HCC students, and general adults who wish to borrow materials and equipment from the Learning Resources Center must have an active registration card on file at the circulation desk. Each patron must present some form of identification, preferably a valid driver's license.

Interlibrary Loan

Most books and periodicals not owned by the HCC Learning Resources Center can be requested from participating libraries through CCLINC (Community College Libraries in North Carolina) or OCLC (Online Computer Library Center).

Electronic Resources Online:

  • NC LIVE - a large collection of databases, covering a wide range of topics, that provides a searchable collection of over 10,000 resources, including magazines, newspapers, and journals, electronic books, historical materials, maps, and much more.

  • SIRS Knowledge Source - a general reference resource comprised of 3 databases (Researcher, Government Reporter, and Renaissance) in one

  • Literature Online (LiOn) - a fully searchable library of more than 350,000 works of English and American poetry, drama and prose, 175 full-text literature journals, and other key criticism and reference resources.

  • CCLINC - a linked catalog that provides access to the collections of each library in the NC Community College system. Searches can be performed on each library individually or collectively as a whole.

  • Project Gutenberg - a large collection of free ebooks.

  • Citation Machine - an online tool that prompts you to enter the necessary information and returns to you a properly formatted MLA and APA citation.

  • E-NC - a grassroots initiative to encourage all North Carolina citizens to use technology, especially the Internet, to improve their quality of life and their economic prospects.

  • Wikipedia - A free online, user edited encyclopedia

  • The Free Dictionary A free online dictionary

  • Worldcat-a "world-wide library catalog" of one billion items and growing!
