The Alpha Eta Phi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an
international honor fraternity at Halifax Community College, chartered in
1982, recently held the initiation ceremony for new members at the Weldon
campus.
Twenty-three new members were inducted into the HCC
chapter whose purpose as a national affiliate is to recognize and promote
academic excellence in American junior and community colleges.
There are more than twelve hundred chapters in the 50
states; North Carolina has 58. The Halifax Community College membership
roster now numbers three hundred sixty-one, including all former inductees
and active members.
Halifax Community College requires that prospective
members be enrolled in an Associate Degree Program. In addition, they must
maintain a minimum cumulative quality-point average of 3.5 for full-time
students and 3.7 for part-time students. They must be of good moral
character and possess recognized qualities of leadership.
Phi Theta Kappa members pledge to serve the community
through leadership, scholarship, and fellowship activities. They strive to
accomplish goals set forth in the national Honors Topic. This year’s
Honors Topic is – "Customs, Traditions & Celebrations: The
Human Drive for Community."
Ken Robol, HCC communications instructor, spoke on
"Excellence - Going the extra mile," during the ceremony. Terry
Wheeler, HCC Dean of Curriculum Programs, was inducted as an honorary
member of HCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Chapter.
Current PTK officers and members conducted the ceremony
with the assistance of advisors, Dr. Pocahontas Jones and Katherine
Sandlin. Dr. Buffaloe, Vice President of Instructional Programs, concluded
the program with appropriate remarks.
Following the ceremony, members and their families
enjoyed fellowship and refreshments.
