| The Halifax Community College Foundation,
Inc. hosted the Fourteenth Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony on
September 21 to recognize students who have achieved academic excellence
and to acknowledge the donors and financial supporters who provide the
prestigious awards through Foundation giving.
One hundred thirteen recipients were recognized during
the mid-morning ceremonies in the HCC Continuing Education Auditorium. A
hefty $112,880 was awarded for scholarships through the HCC Foundation,
the Halifax Community College Trustees, and outside organizations and
individuals.
Donors in attendance represented big businesses like
International Paper and Roanoke Valley Energy, but they also included
individual families. The family of the late Dr. Alice Lewter and also
the parents of the late Brandi Noel Ogburn attended to present
scholarships in memory of their loved ones - a perpetual reminder and
also a gift of opportunity for other young people. Other awards came
from local businesses, agencies, individuals, clubs and civic groups,
and professional organizations.
In opening remarks, Dr. Ted Gasper, HCC president,
noted the record enrollment at HCC and thanked the donors who made the
scholarships possible. But he also noted the tremendous need of many of
the students.
Pam Ballew, executive director of the HCC Foundation,
announced the following new scholarships that have been established this
year:
- The Peter Luther Kasper Memorial Scholarship
- The Barbara A. Pepper Memorial Scholarship – donated by her sons, Jay, Jon and Steve Baker
- Margaret and Linwood Nixon, Sr. Scholarship
- Dr. Alice J. Lewter Memorial
Ballew also reiterated the purpose of the HCC Foundation - to provide
financial assistance for students to enable them to continue their
education in order to become productive members of the local workforce.
