PHI THETA KAPPA INDUCTS NEW MEMBERS AT HCC
And PTK Brings Home Honors

The Alpha Eta Phi chapter of
Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor fraternity at Halifax Community
College, chartered in 1982, recently held the initiation ceremony for
new members at the Weldon campus.
Nineteen new members were inducted into the HCC
chapter whose purpose as a national affiliate is to recognize and
promote academic excellence in American junior and community colleges.
Phi Theta Kappa members pledge to serve the community
through leadership, scholarship, and fellowship activities. They strive
to accomplish goals set forth in the national Honors Topic. The HCC
chapter has just recently received national honors for membership
enrollment and outstanding service.
Alpha Eta Phi Chapter received the following awards at
the 2002 Phi Theta Kappa International Convention held April 4-6, 2002,
in Nashville, Tennessee: George O. Bierkoe Distinguished Member Award -
Deborah Wray.
The Hallmark Awards recognize excellence in programs
and projects that promote the Phi Theta Kappa Hallmarks of Scholarship,
Leadership, Service and Fellowship. Outstanding chapters, advisors,
members, and college presidents are recognized for their achievements.
Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor
society for two-year colleges, with more than 1,200 chapters at
community, technical and junior colleges in all 50 states, Canada,
Germany, Japan and U.S. territories abroad. North Carolina has 58
chapters. The Halifax Community College membership roster now numbers
three hundred fifty-seven including all former inductees and active
members.
Halifax Community College requires that prospective
members be enrolled in an Associate Degree Program. In addition, they
must maintain a minimum cumulative quality-point average of 3.5 for
full-time students and 3.7 for part-time students. They must be of good
moral character and possess recognized qualities of leadership.
Myra Robertson, HCC Division Chair of Health Sciences
and Director of the HCC Nursing Program, was the speaker for the
initiation ceremony.
Because of their contributions and their outstanding
volunteer service to the local chapter, Mrs. Helen Brown - HCC Trustee,
Ralph Reynolds - HCC Vice President of Administrative Services, and Mrs.
Evelyn Kientz - Director of Evening and Weekend Programs received
certificates of honorary membership from the national organization.
