The Halifax Community College Student Government
Association (SGA) is winding down from a flurry of activities during the
fall semester. SGA is a vital campus link, connecting students and
administration, in a continuing effort to improve campus services.
SGA representatives attended a state conference in
Atlantic Beach earlier this month. The group unveiled a canned food
drive campaign for the needy in November that culminated in December,
and they sponsored a campus "Turkey Bowl" in November to raise
money to help the local Union Mission.
Some student SGA members chipped in as servers for the
Thanksgiving meal at the Union Mission, and others helped to secure
coats in a "Coats for Kids" drive sponsored by the campus Phi
Theta Kappa chapter. SGA was also involved in a project to provide
transportation for HCC students who found it difficult to get to the
Weldon campus for classes. The SGA also designed and decorated a float
for area Christmas parades.
A recent, unique SGA project was the effort to get all
HCC students and faculty to write notes of appreciation and/or to sign a
giant poster to be sent to selected police/fire/rescue units in support
of their sacrifices following the 9/11 disaster.
The SGA group ‘s faculty advisor is Emily Holmes,
HCC director of counseling services. Student Government president is
Ruth Gee. Lacrecia Mebans is vice president, Michelle Boyce is secretary
and Deborah Wray is the treasurer. |
