HCC PRIDE hosts first mentor-protégé luncheon
Halifax Community College’s PRIDE male mentoring program
hosted the first-ever Mentor & Protégé Gathering, Aug. 23 in
The Centre. The luncheon brought together students, faculty,
staff, administration and community members for a time of
conversation and engagement.
“We are engaging more young men in the system here at
Halifax Community College. We have made progress,” said HCC
President, Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr. He mentioned that
increased graduation rates are a focus. “We have to
emphasize completing programs here… We have a good structure
in place and we have to show results down the road.”
“Mentoring is an important component to success,” said PRIDE
Director Daniel Lovett to potential mentors. “It’s important
to keep moving forward and continue to motivate them [the
students] and help them understand that they can accomplish
their goals and they can succeed.”
Other speakers included PRIDE Learning Coaches Michael Earl,
Marcus Lewis and Stevie Lawrence, as well as James
Washington and Thomas Utley.
