Students attend fall orientation sessions prior to classes

Halifax Community College held new student orientation sessions on Aug. 12 in The Centre. The sessions gave students an opportunity to hear from college administration, faculty, staff and returning students, and to explore the campus. According to HCC President, Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr., the college is on track to have record-breaking enrollment this year.

Griffin talked about the difference between wisdom and knowledge. He also referred to a study that discussed the top five mistakes students often make during their first semester. These included missing class, overloading on classes, over-surfing (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.), procrastination, and trying to achieve an education alone. “These are critical issues that can cause problems for you,” he added.

Students were also reminded of the tobacco-free campus policy that went into effect Aug. 1. After the opening session, students then toured the campus, visiting various departments.
