ASPIRE Project holds leadership week at Halifax CC

The Halifax County and Weldon City Schools Community-Based Abstinence Education Program called ASPIRE, which stands for Abstinence Standards Promote Individual Respect Education provided a week of leadership training to Halifax County middle school students, July 19-22 on the Halifax Community College campus. The ASPIRE Project is funded by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

According to Coordinator for Project ASPIRE Wayne Anthony, the week provided leadership training to a number of students. “We hope that they will learn leadership skills that will help them be successful at the next level, which is high school and in the real world,” said Anthony. Along with the leadership training, the students were involved in an art class where they completed an abstinence project. They also participated in a public speaking class during the week.

Members of the Halifax Community College Women of Excellence female mentoring group led a workshop on making good first impressions to female middle school students during a session of ASPIRE training.

Staff from the Halifax Community College PRIDE male mentoring group led a workshop on being a leader and how to deal with peer pressure to male middle school students during a session of ASPIRE training.
