HCC Student graduates from State Leadership Institute
Halifax Community College (HCC) student Lagolia Price of
Littleton recently graduated from the 2009-2010 North
Carolina Community College Student Leadership Institute
(SLI) in Raleigh. She was one of 25 students from North
Carolina’s 58 community colleges who completed the program.
More than 860,000 students are enrolled in community
colleges across the state.
“Representing HCC at the North Carolina Community College
Student Leadership Institute has been my most significant
endeavor since attending community college…It was
overwhelming to know that I was chosen as one of 25 out of
so many other talented and dedicated students,” said Price.
“Through this institute, I gained the leadership skills
necessary to be an effective leader on my campus community
and beyond. The Student Leadership Institute has contributed
largely in restoring my faith in myself, and has opened new
doors and directed me on a path that will positively impact
me for the rest of my life,” she added.
At HCC, Price stays busy. As a result of SLI, she arranged
the “Go Green” workshop presentation, which is featured on
the college’s home page. She worked closely with students,
faculty, administrators and the web master to develop the
workshop. The Go Green Initiative was organized on campus
after the workshop was presented and Price continues to be
an active member. A student in the Advertising & Graphic
Design curriculum, Price has also volunteered in the HCC
Print Shop, Office of Institutional Advancement and
Cosmetology department. She currently works part-time in the
Academic Affairs office and attends St. Luke Baptist Church.
In 2009, she was the recipient of the North Carolina
Community College System’s Academic Excellence award and
was named an HCC
Student Local African-American Hero. That same year, she
earned a certificate in Advertising & Graphic Design/Graphic
Design, graduating summa cum laude.
Participants started the learning process at SLI with a week
full of workshops at Peace College in Raleigh last summer.
Students worked within groups on a project of their choice.
The projects consisted of diverse workshops, which they
exchanged to carry back to their individual campuses. After
completing the summer week, students returned in the fall
and spring for weekend mini-sessions.
