Halifax Community College (HCC) Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) cadets graduated in a ceremony on campus, Dec. 17. This marked HCC’s 33rd BLET Academy graduation. Northampton County Sheriff’s Office provided the Honor Guard.

Awards and recognition were also presented. Special recognition for class president went to Deputy William Stroud, who also garnered the Academic Excellence and Top Gun awards. The Outstanding Cadet award went to Cadet Bruce Robistow. The class recognized Ranger Nicole Crider as its Most Valuable Cadet and Cadet Bruce Robistow as its Top Cop.

The Honorable Drewery Beale, mayor of Roanoke Rapids, gave the keynote address. Beale served for more than 40 years in law enforcement prior to his retirement in 1998.

“That badge does not come off at five o’clock,” said Beale. “You wear that badge 24 hours a day.”

“How far you go in your career is entirely up to you…The decisions you make every day that you wear that badge will be the decisions that will follow you the rest of your life,” said Beale.

“You don’t need me to tell you of the contributions that our society now expects of you and you don’t need for me to tell you of the trials and triumphs that await you,” said Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr., HCC’s president, to the graduates. “I charge you to lay aside that which is no longer needed and take up those tools which have lead you to this place in life.”
