HCC OFFERS LATERAL ENTRY
PROGRAM FOR SPRING SEMESTER 2008
Requirements to enter program have changed
Halifax Community College
offers even more options now for those interested in
becoming teachers through the Lateral Entry Program. With
the adoption of recent revisions, admission to the program
is now easier and quicker.
The certificate program is geared toward K-12 teachers and
individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree and are interested
in the teaching profession. To qualify, individuals have to
hold a B.S. or B.A. degree from an accredited institution.
To register, students need to bring official transcripts,
submit an application and follow the HCC admission process.
Students should also check on financial aid availability.
Lateral Entry course work includes human growth and
development, learning theory, instructional technology,
school policies and procedures, home, school and community
collaboration, and classroom organization and management.
Courses offered by partnering senior institutions include
instructional methods, literacy and diversity.
North Carolina’s community colleges help the state meet its
workforce needs through the Lateral Entry Program. One of
the state’s critical needs is for classroom teachers in
K-12, especially in rural and low-wealth areas.
In fall 2006, HCC received approval to offer the Lateral
Entry Program. An alternate route to teaching in North
Carolina, the program allows an individual to obtain a
position and begin teaching right away, while earning a
license as they teach. The program’s goal is to provide a
course of study leading to general competencies required for
teachers. It is designed to get more teachers certified in
the state’s public schools.
Those interested in the program should sign up during HCC’s
Early Registration, slated for 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.,
Thursday, Dec. 6. To register, contact B.T. Brown at (252)
536-7245 or
brownbt@halifaxcc.edu. For more information on the
Lateral Entry program, contact Dr. Pocahontas Jones at (252)
