Contributing to HCC

  • Is my contribution tax deductible? Yes. The HCC Foundation Inc. is a nonprofit organization designated by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. We will provide an acknowledgement of your contribution for tax purposes..
  • May I designate my gift for a particular purpose? Yes. Please indicate on the contribution form how you would like us to direct your gift.
  • Are there opportunities to honor or recognize the achievements of an individual, family, business or organization? Yes, you may recognize individuals or organizations with your gifts.
  • Will the Foundation accept multi-year commitments? Yes. Such contributions provide enhanced tax benefits and allow you to make a more significant investment in HCC than might be possible with a one-time donation.
  • What are the College's funding needs? Please see the list of the College's current funding priorities.
  • What is an endowment? An endowment is similar to an interest-bearing "savings account" for the institution. The principal, or corpus, of the endowment is invested but never spent, thus ensuring that donors' generosity will continue throughout the life of the College. Through investments, the endowment account generates interest income in perpetuity, which provides financial support for the area of the donor's choosing. An endowment account can be established with a minimum gift of $5,000. Foundation endowments currently support scholarships.
  • What is the difference between restricted and unrestricted funds? Restricted gifts are designated for a specific purpose. Unrestricted gifts are those for which a specific purpose has not been designated. Unrestricted funding is used where it is needed most.

Supporting HCC Scholarships

  • Can I meet the student(s) who benefited from my donation? Each year, the Foundation holds a donor recognition luncheon in the fall. Scholarship contact persons and donors who contributed to the HCC Foundation between July 1 and June 30 that year are invited to the event. During this event, we make every effort to seat donors and their beneficiaries at the same table. However, if this is not possible, you will still be provided with an opportunity to meet those who benefitted from your generosity..
  • When are scholarship recipients selected? Each year, scholarships are awarded during the fall and spring semesters. Scholarship funds are divided between the two semesters. Students apply for scholarships in May, and recipients are selected in the fall and again in the spring.
  • How can I set up a Foundation scholarship for an HCC student? An annual scholarship can be established with a minimum gift of $1,000. Endowed scholarships can be established with a minimum gift of $5,000. Scholarships can be named in honor or memory of a family member, a beloved professor or other individual or group. Please see the list of available scholarships and contact the Foundation to get started.
  • Can someone help me establish scholarship criteria? Yes. The Foundation will be glad to assist you in developing standards that will be used to select your scholarship recipients.
  • Can scholarship donors select the recipients of their scholarships? Per IRS guidelines, donors cannot select the recipients of their scholarships. Instead, a College committee chooses scholarship recipients.
  • Can I pay the tuition of a particular HCC student? You can but not through the Foundation. If you would like to assist a particular student, please contact the Business Office to discuss payment options. Please note that paying a particular student's expenses is a business transaction and not a charitable contribution for tax purposes.
  • How can I make contributions to the Foundation? To make a contribution through cash, check or credit card, please complete the contribution form and mail it to the Foundation. You may also easily and securely contribute online . Please see the various ways to support HCC and select the ones that best meet your needs.
  • How much is one semester of tuition and fees for a full-time student? Tuition and fees for a full-time student are approximately $900 per semester.
  • What is the process for the scholarship selections? We enter scholarship criteria and information about scholarship applicants into a database, which helps us match scholarships with applicants who best fit the scholarship criteria. In addition, the selection committee evaluates the required essay and recommendation letters.
  • Does the same student receive the same scholarship for both semesters? Yes. When we award scholarships in the fall of each year, we do so for the fall and spring semesters. Unless a student completes his or her courses at the end of the fall semester or no longer fits the scholarship criteria, he or she will receive the funds in the fall and spring semesters.
  • If a student finishes his or her course of study in the fall semester or no longer fits the scholarship criteria, is the scholarship awarded to another student for the spring semester? Yes. By doing so, we ensure that donors' contributions are put to good use.
