Scholarship Questions & Answers

Halifax Community College Scholarships are available to assist students who have demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence and completion of a program at Halifax Community College.

Applications are available from high school counselors and from the HCC Financial Aid Office. Only one application needs to be submitted for all of the scholarships available.

What grades do I need to qualify?

The criteria varies, but the minimum is a GPA of 2.000. This does not apply to GED graduates.

Are there scholarships for part-time students?

Yes! A few awards are available for part-time students. These awards are pro-rated based on the number of hours you enroll.

How can I increase my chances of being selected?

There are several things that will increase your chance of being selected as a scholarship recipient:

  1. Complete the entire application. Incomplete applications never make it to the Committee.
  2. Get good references. References from someone who has known you on a professional basis (employer, teacher, or counselor) are best. A recommendation from an HCC employee earns the highest rating. Do not use recommendations from family members.
  3. Write a good applicant statement. Describe your financial need. How committed are you to completing your education? What are your career goals? Why should you receive a scholarship?

What is the deadline for applying?

Fall Semester deadline is the first Monday in May of each year.
Spring Semester deadline is the last day of class in December of each year.

I’m a GED graduate. Can I qualify for a scholarship?

Yes! In fact, there are several scholarships that are just for GED graduates.

Are there scholarships for Spring and Summer?

A limited number of awards are made for the Spring Semester. No awards are available for the Summer Semester.

Do I have to submit income tax forms?

No. You must submit these forms to apply for HCC financial aid but not for a scholarship.

How are recipients selected?

Three members of the Financial Aid Committee will review your application and score it based on set criteria. The applicant with the highest average score who meets all of the other scholarship criteria is selected.

How will I receive the scholarship?

You will receive notification by mail if you are selected along with a list of the things you must do to receive the award. Scholarship checks are distributed at registration. Recipients must present their registration form to verify that they are registered for the appropriate number of credit hours.

Could I lose my award?

Fall recipients must maintain a specified GPA, attend the annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony, and maintain the appropriate number of credit hours to receive their award for the Spring Semester.

How much are the scholarships?

The number and amount of awards change each semester. Click here for a list.
