Personal Profile:
I was born in Farmville, NC. However, I have lived in the Littleton/Roanoke Rapids area most of my life. After graduating from Roanoke Rapids High School, I attended East Carolina University. After I graduated, I began my teaching career. I have taught at Weldon High School, Roanoke Rapids High School, Warren County High School, and Halifax Community College. I love teaching. I also enjoy traveling, reading, cooking, cross-stitch, and yard work. Family is extremely important to me. I am married to a wonderful husband. My mom and dad are still living and live in this area. Also, I have four sisters and nine nieces or nephews.
Educational Philosophy:
I believe that each student is a unique individual. My goal as an educator is to instill in my students the desire and self-confidence to be the best they can be. It is not enough to just get by; we all have to strive for excellence.
Education:
East Carolina University, Greenville, NC
MAED in Math Education, December, 1998
BS in Mathematics, minor in Psychology, May, 1980
Experience:
For more than 30 years I have taught mathematics. I have taught mostly at the high school level. I have had several unique opportunities. I received a grant from Dominion Power for Technical Mathematics. The students physically measured and then computed the cost of constructing a sidewalk from the I-95 bridge to HCC. They also made scaled drawings of the properties. Various people in the community integrated their jobs with mathematical topics taught in class with presentations. Students can see the relationship between math and real world applications. Teaching is exciting. I am grateful for the opportunity to work at Halifax Community College.
