Educational philosophy
As instructors, I believe we initiate and receive the
"pay it forward" concept with our students every day.
I am a product of the community college system and was one of those
non-traditional students.
Attempting to maintain the everyday trials associated with a job, home,
and family while attending classes in the evening - before there were
online courses. Many of my
instructors influenced me in ways they will never know. Although I stay in
touch with some of them, most will never know how much I truly owe to
them. I was challenged to do
the impossible, praised for achievements, guided toward asking "what if",
and gently counseled when I just did not get it!
They encouraged transferring to a 4-year institution and how much
brighter it would make my future.
How right they were!
Years later, it was one of those instructors who also
encouraged me to consider teaching at the community college and I will be
eternally grateful. Students
are the reason I enjoy it so much.
Teaching at the community college level also allows me to "pay it
forward" for all that's been given to me.
I recognize the same struggles, doubts, frustrations, and late
nights that students at HCC are experiencing as they strive for that
brighter future. Their future
is what it is all about. As
an instructor, if I can pass on to students even a small portion of what
was passed on to me; it will be worth it all!
A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.
